Blood Under The Altar a novel by Mark W. Stoub "You'd think a church would be a safe place to be..." Small towns are known for their characters and their secrets. When Angus McPherson comes to Shoestring, Texas, to look into the death of a fellow pastor, he finds an abundance of both. Angus forms an unlikely partnership with the newly elected Chief of Police, Hector Chavez. Together they poke and prod through an investigation that uncovers more affairs than a romance novel and a menagerie of folks withholding evidence. Meanwhile a killer stalks the sleepy streets of Shoestring, looking for the next victim, dead set on getting Angus out of the way... A transplant from Scotland to the idyllic Texas Hill Country, Reverend Angus McPherson leads a serene family life. He often feels more at home with exploring ultimate mysteries than dealing with the mundane. Then the bizarre death of a friend and colleague leads him to confront old ghosts, form new alliances, and sets him on a dangerous path to unravel a disturbing, complex series of unsolved crimes before those he loves are taken from him...

Well written mystery. As a fellow Presbyterian minister, I also greatly appreciated the good theology. We forget that the church often reflects what is going on in the community.
Perhaps I am not the only person who, having grown up in a small southern town like Shoestring, Tx, guiltily harbors the suspicion that all is not what it appears to be. How delicious it is to witness the unraveling of that thread of staight-laced lives...the wrinkling of those starched ruffles and creased suit pants. I grew to love the scoundrels as well as the slightly flawed heroes of this wonderful novel. When is the author bringing out a sequel so I can get back into Shoestring?
I met Mark W Stoub in Big Bend ,Texas. at a gas station where I worked. I bought his book (he even signed it for me) and told him I'd give it a try. I finally did and I loved it. Well written and the characters were well developed. A thriller that holds your addition. I'm a big reader and judgmental when it comes to books. I like to spend my time wisely and on this book I surely have. Thanks Mark and his lovely wife for talking me into buying it. I highly recommend.
Great short mystery. Once started, you won't want to put it down. I really enjoyed all the side mysteries in this "who done it?" book.
The characters were not well-developed and there was no foreshadowing of emotions, mood, or events. The author did have significant knowledge of The Presbyterian religion. I found the book disappointing and a poorly developed murder mystery with too much extraneous antecdotes.
